Understanding ratios & percentages
What does the ratio mean?
A ratio such as 10:1 describes the concentration of an extract. It generally means that about 10 parts of the original botanical material were used to produce 1 part of extract.
What does the percentage mean?
A percentage refers to the stated active compound or constituent in a standardised product. For example, 20% means the specified active compound is present at 20% — it does not mean that the product is 20% powder.
What if there is no ratio or percentage?
Not every product has a stated ratio or percentage. This does not mean the material is lower quality. Some products are supplied without a specific standardisation or extraction ratio, so no percentage or ratio is stated.
